This Time Next Week
Last day in İzmir.
The AKP swept the elections last night.
This time next week, I'll be on my way to Toronto.
Feels like an end of an era.
The AKP won 47% of the vote while the democratic party CHP only got 21%. The radical party MHP also made it into Parliament. Together with the AKP, Turkey has been painted Islamic, yet AKP claims it won't bring Turkey back to the past but move it forward. It's offering change, stable economy and progress into the EU.
It is a solemn day in İzmir. It was already evident last night when early results were being announced that even though people said they don't want the AKP to rule, the votes went to them. Maybe it was fear. Maybe it was concealing true emotions and following what the majority was saying. Who knows.
I'm glad İzmir voted CHP, but that was not a surprise. Most of the MHP votes from the East went to the AKP, a prediction that came true, and I think a major tipping point in the elections.
Here's a map of Turkey so you can see what area voted for what party.
Istanbul
I go back to Istanbul tonight and tomorrow is my last day at work. I never thought the day would come, but now that is has, I cannot believe how quickly this has all happened. This was all a learning experience. I am walking away from everything having learned a lot about myself and the nature of the job abroad. I do not regret a single moment. Each moment has only made me who I am right now. Thank you TDN, you shall be missed.
Wednesday is my day of shopping and I think on Thursday I will say goodbye to a number of people I've met here. Friday and Saturday I will spend with Ipek at her parents place just outside of Ankara. Saturday night will be my goodbye get together on the patio and Sunday I will board a plane and 14 hours later will land in Toronto.
Toronto
What I expect in Toronto.
Well, a number of you cannot wait to see me at home. Here's what I am expecting.
Show up at the airport around 8 p.m. British Airways flight from London. Wait by the gate with flowers and balloons in hand and a huge sign that says: Canada Loves You!
Maybe that will get me to stay put for more than half a year? What do you think? If you missed me a lot, you'll do it.
