Salty Aegean
Saturday was my day off and planned trip to Cesme to visit one of its many beaches and resorts and swim in the Aegean Sea.
I headed out in the morning to do my interview on wind energy. I arrived in Ardic and the guy had a car sent for me. We drive along the coast. I see the clear aqua blue waters and white beaches and smile. We pass the Sheraton Hotel where everyone has been telling me to start my exploration of the beaches. It is only later on that I learn this is not Cesme.
We arrive at the house and he welcomes me. It is a beautiful place. Mediterranean architecture, white walls, swimming pool filled with sea water, lounge area after lounge area, cactus, palm trees and a walk to the sea.
After we completed our interview, a huge family came. A husband and wife with their children and their grand children. It was a family reunion of a sort.
I went to swim in the Aegean Sea.
The beach was rocky, but there were sand parts in the sea itself.
The water was crystal clear and warm.
The waves rather big, but manageable. Later in the day the tide was pretty big because it kept pulling me into the sea whenever I stood in one spot.
When the water splashed my face and I licked my lips, I felt so much salt. When I was drying off, I noticed salt forming on my skin. I didn't realize Aegean is so salty, but my skin hasn't felt smoother. I didn't want to shower it off.
The day was something of a dream. I ate with these two families, drank, talked, joked and made a number of contacts for possible articles.
I was even welcomed by one family to their Norway home in Oslo. I invited them to Vancouver where they plan on vacationing next summer.
At the end of the day, they drove me to Cesme, which is about 6 km away from the Sheraton Hotel - so everyone who said the Sheraton is the center of Cesme is wrong.
It is a nice little town with a natural harbour, a castle, pebble streets with lots of small shops. I bought post cards and a couple of gifts. My bag weighted a ton at this point and went to get ice cream and headed home.
When I got to my hotel, I was so tired that I just ordered room service and sat outside on the balcony.
My shoulders and chest are a bit red today. Oh well. Thank goodness I am not burned.
I wish I could go back there. I wish, I wish, clicks red heels together...
