Full Page Article

Last weekend I was given an assignment.
UNHCR was showcasing photos of Darfur refugees in Chad. I was invited to a boat cruise and a discussion with the organizers.

It just so happened that I was the only journalist who came to the discussion on Saturday morning. I had four experts answering my questions. We spent an hour and a half talking about Darfur.

I had a huge story!

In the evening I headed to Ortakoy Square and missed the cruise by 10 minutes. Istanbul traffic is horrible. So I walked around the square. Sat at peer and looked out to the Asian side. Witnessed a Turkish wedding. Took tons of pictures. Tried on some Turkish clothes and touched about every piece of jewelery.

In the evening, the showcasing of the photos began. Three large screens had images projected onto them. I was deeply moved as were the people in the square.

I had a huge article in my hands along with photos from the photographer.

Editors decided that I was going to get one full page for this story. They weren't lying. I wrote a 1500 word article and a couple of sidebars and the rest were photos.

I am proud of this piece. I've written a number of things on Darfur and seeing something this big published, hopefully, will get people's attention and turn their focus to a country that's been in civil war for three years now.

Women suffer most in Darfur conflict

Do read it and let me know what you think. I have tons of copies of this issue and would gladly share with anyone the photos that were published with the article. The photo here appeared on the front page at the top directing people to the feature inside the paper.
