Books

Kurt Vonnegut passed away on Wednesday. I was first introduced to the author in satire class reading Mother Night, which to date has become one of my favourite books. I recommend it to everyone and I lend it out more than anything else from my personal library.

The Globe and Mail has been publishing articles on him since his death and today's Art section features an article written by his friend who reflects on his words and works in "Mortal soul, immortal words." I was deeply touched and felt I understood Vonnegut a bit more (even though, I don't think it's possible to really know the man).

In other book news, Michael Ondaatje is publishing another book. I cannot wait to read it. There's an interesting Q&A in today's Globe.

I haven't been able to do much school related work, but with my new power to concentrate, I'm able to read again.

I remember being able to read three novels per week and remember plot lines, characters, themes and quotes. That hasn't been possible for a little while now. Been wondering how I managed to not fail fourth year undergrad.

I've been buying tons of books. I've read and completely recommend the following titles:
A Complicated Kindness - Miriam Toews
On Beauty - Zadie Smith
Eagles and Angels - Juli Zeh

Brilliant. All absolutely brilliant. I've read them in the last couple of weeks and now I'm reading Magic Seeds by V.S. Naipaul.

Today, I purchased another book. Girlfriend in a Coma by Douglas Coupland. Read a couple of pages and it seems promising.

If you have any titles that you recommend, let me know. I'm always looking for new books. I have a couple on my reading list, but currently they are hard covers and I cannot stand hard covers.

What are you reading now? What do you recommend?
