Vacation, Well Sort of
Reading week came and went. I had a really hard time doing any work. I started a new medication that pretty much wouldn't let me get out of bed. I wouldn't have the energy to get out of my apartment. I would get up, walk around my apartment and feel tired and the need to lie down again. That lasted days.
I gathered all the energy I could get and headed to Whistler Tuesday night. That morning I was going to cancel my plans. I was really ill. I was going to see an old friend from undergrad. He's up in Whistler working away and figuring out where his life is headed.
I arrived an hour before we were to meet. I called up J, who was in Whistler the whole week, and he along with his father kept me company until it was time to meet S. It was good to see a familiar face. It was good to catch up. It was nice talking about something other than J-school.
S lives in the middle of nowhere. I was using my cell phone as a flashlight when we were heading to his place. He lives in a lovely cabin with two roommates. Fantastic views. Threats of bears and cougars. But, a cabin. Nice place to do a lot of relaxing and thinking. Didn't get much sleep. Actually, didn't sleep at all.
Met J at 9 a.m. the next morning for a day of skiing. I was exhausted. When we went to buy my lift ticket, a woman approached us asking if we needed lift tickets. She gave me one - something about good karma. She couldn't use it because she pulled her back and she got a 2 for 1 deal. A day of free skiing. Good karma.
I had a great day of skiing. After going down twice on the green run, J decided I was ready for something more difficult! This being my second time skiing. We went down the blue runs. They were more icy, longer, steeper with fog at the bottom. I somehow managed. I got separated from J at one point and had the most lovely run. Took the wrong turn, ended up at the edge of the mountain, the sun came out and I understood why people find this sport relaxing. I beat him to the bottom. He worried that something happened to me. Nope, I was fine. I got it. I understood why he lives for the mountain.
The next few days flew. I left for Victoria Friday evening. Four hours later, I was meeting R. He made me sushi for dinner. We stayed up till 3 in the morning talking. I couldn't sleep - there's a shocker.
The next day, after breakfast, he took me around to see Victoria. He planned everything. We walked along the harbour, oceanfront, went to a park and then headed back downtown. He showed me small markets, which were a collection of stores with products made by independent designers. Just perfect. The weekend flew. Before I knew it, it was Sunday and time to head back.
The vacation was what I needed. The only problem is that I needed to find energy to do school work. I am finding difficulty concentrating. I am in need of another week. I am in need of time. Unfortunately, journalism is all about deadlines. I'm struggling. Sometimes I have good days where my mind is clear and I get a lot of work done, other days I cannot get out of bed. It's tough. It's really tough.
