Concert!
I finally went to a concert - alone! Don't have any friends here who have the same musical interests. Got a free ticket thanks to Ubyssey's culture editor to see the Cradle of Filth show with 3 Inches of Blood and 69 Eyes.
I was very impressed with the venue. I was told the Commodore Ballroom is the best venue to see a live show. True. Very true. The acoustics are amazing. Usually in a metal show, the snare drums drown out the vocals, and not in this case. When Dani Filth shrieked, his voice travelled to the end of the hall.
3 Inches of Blood were brilliant. Local metal band with inspiration from the good 80's rock and it was a pleasure to listen to them. There was a special guest appearance made by Byron Stroud, who is the bassist for Strapping Young Lad (another Vancouver band) and Fear Factory. We wished him a happy metal birthday.
Then I have no idea what this band was trying to pull, but it didn't work. 69 Eyes - gothic rock. It was like watching Robin Black impersonate Aerosmith with his mike stand turns and constant hand gestures in the form of a cross. The music sucked. I was really disappointed since Finland produces such amazing bands and this is just an insult.
You know when things are going bad, when you have the guitarists getting the crowd to clap because there's no reaction in the mosh pit. Or when you start hearing Cradle chants.
Glad they went off the stage.
Cradle actually impressed me. They are getting bigger and bigger. I remember seeing a small show with a fog machine and a couple of lights for their Midian tour and now you have this tier level stage. Huge back drop screen with videos accompanying their songs. Or just satanic images and creative illustrations. It was a very well put together show.
And I ended up meeting a certain someone. It must have been the vampiric screams and sexual allure of men with long hair and black makeup and all the good stuff.
We ended up going into the pit together for a bit - and after the show walked around Vancouver in the rain for over an hour looking for the hotel he was staying at. His friends abandoned him. We found it and we parted our ways. He was a lot of fun to talk to. It was nice talking to someone about the same music interests and did I mention he is tall, black hair and has a ring on his bottom lip. Yup.
It was an amazing night. I had an amazing weekend. And I just filled the concert review with the newspaper and when it's published I shall link to it from my blog.
I cannot wait to review my next show. Cannot. At least I get free tickets out of it.
