First Day of School

I was late. No surprise there. When am I ever on time?

I left an hour earlier, and I got to the campus just on time, but I know only one way to get to the journalism building, and I'm certain there's a shortcut, but I don't know it. I really don't know my way around the campus.

I made it into the building just in time. The orientation was just about to begin. I sat in a room with about 50 people and 10 instructors and I asked myself: What am I doing in school?

I graduated in April. I should be done school. Why am I back in school? When will September ever feel like the month that it's not back to school. As everyone went around the room and introduced themselves and talked a bit about their professional background, goals and aspirations, I began to calm down. I'm not in a program with professional journalists. Actually, a number of people never had any journalism experience. They are here to figure out their life. To move to another field. To try something new. Sure, there are those who do have journalism experience, but they are here to do something different with their lives too.

I'm sitting in the newsroom right now. I'm starting to feel like I belong. I think I'll be just fine (unless it turns out I'm a horrible writer and really have no talent and shouldn't be in the publishing industry).

I'm really pleased and excited about the program. The program is very professional. The instructors knowledgeable and passionate and they know how to convey their information. It's refreshing coming from a brand new program at York that was hiring instructors based on I don't know what criteria. The instructors come from various backgrounds and together they form this amazing team that will creatively and professionally inspire the students in the program. Together we are going to be a fabulous class. Oh, and everyone is approachable!

I went to my first class today. Media Law. The instructor didn't have a typed out lecture. He just spoke. He reminded me a lot of my American Gothic Literature class. A well of information. You asked a question and he'll answer it and go off on a tangent and come full circle. I think I will enjoy listening to him speak. So far so good.

Now, I need to buy a couple of textbooks (I usually get those when a reading comes up) and probably find the library (again I do that when a paper is due). I'm not much of a student, yet a scholarship worthy student.

In one hour - BBQ and more socializing.

And then I need to plan where I want to do my internship. Two internships in three months. I'm thinking London, UK or New York City. A second year student went to New York to do her internship and another one did hers at the United Nations. Now, that's more of where I want to be. Your votes?
