Water

There's a water issue in Istanbul this year.

Not only is tap water not drinkable, once in a while, certain regions will be cut off from water. That means yesterday it was our turn. I couldn't shower, brush my teeth or anything.

There are jugs of water everywhere. Whenever tap water comes on, we must fill them up because we never know when they'll shut off our water. There were moments when the water was off for a week.

My roommates have been here for a very long time. Two have been studying for a year and the other one is an English teacher who has been here for almost two years.

I'm not surprised that she's staying here. I took a trip out to the main historic street of Istanbul and I was stunned. I even found a Starbucks coffee shop. Thank goodness! I can have coffee!

There are so many beautiful shops and it isn't touristy as the other side of Istanbul where everyone is trying to sell you something or ask you your name. None of that. You can walk in peace, look at beautiful shoes and I mean stunning shoes and in about a few minutes I am going to get groceries and then I just must try on some shoes.

Forget work, forget papers. It's hot and I'm going on the terrace to sun bathe.

I hope so. Or first impressions are misleading and I'm just taking things in as a tourist and not as someone who is going to be actually getting to know the country on a different level.
