Homework & Parties
Here's the lowdown of what happened in the last two days.
Thursday:
Had an amazing Multiplatform Journalism class. We are beginning with online journalism - what a way to start off a school year - doing something I know how to do. Class assignment: No technology for 8 hours. Write a 300 word report. Well, that shouldn't be so hard. I went through serious withdrawal when I went to Europe, so this shall be a piece of cake. I feel like I will be cheating this game a bit because I plan on walking around Vancouver streets on Sunday...oh well. Just need to promise not to answer the cell phone.
I struck up a conversation with a girl in my group and post class we headed to the bookstore to actually buy books. On our way there, intercepted by another student who was headed for free food at another organization. We couldn't resist. Starving students. That's the good thing about orientation week - you can eat for free for a week.
She gave me the lowdown on Vancouver. Anything I wanted to know. Salons, shopping, concerts, live venues, bars, clubs -- you know, the important things. She really did tell me where I can get "anything" I want and who knew that after a week in Vancouver I'd know everything. :)
Friday:
Class begins at 9:30 not 9:00 a.m. Oops. Immediately, one of the first girls I met wanted to know if I'd like to go out and do something tonight. Then we asked someone else and on and on and in about 10 minutes we have the whole class wanting to go out for drinks tonight.
Then the night got ruined. We were assigned a writing assignment due 9 a.m. Saturday morning. Write about anything "newsy" that's happening on campus. Go! hehe. Well, the idea is great, except I don't know anything about the campus. Where anything is on campus or what is happening on campus. This wasn't how I planned on learning about the UBC campus.
I have a great story idea! A number of us grad award/scholarship recipient students haven't been given our awards. The grad awards office is on "vacation" till the end of this week. I've spent three hours running around the campus trying to figure out who I can talk to about this issue. I even conducted an interview while I was on the bus heading home. I have 4 hours to write the story and meet my drinking buddies. Oh yes, the night isn't all totally ruined. We are all still meeting up. Devoted journalists!
Tomorrow:
There's this huge Journalism houseparty happening. And from the sound of the email/invitation, if you don't show up, you will be black listed forever. It is for past, present and well, no future journalists. We're all going.
I really like the intimate class. Everyone knows each other now and what a way to meet friends.
