Court
I had my first news writing same day assignment. Was supposed to go to a police press conference, but volunteered to do a different story - since when do I ever follow the norm?
Was assigned to cover a court case. A wacky one at that. A woman plead guilty to abducting her kids. She had them for five years when she had one more child and then on her return to Vancouver was arrested. She gave birth to another child in prison. So complicated and so exciting - the whole being in court and having to report on it!
Of course, can't bring in recording devices into the court room. But, I did that. I didn't use it - no worries, but the moment it was over (literally 10 minutes and 5 of which I missed because I was late) all the journalists swarmed the victim and the recording devices come out.
Got to talk to the dad and the defense counsel. Wow. My blood was rushing. Heart beating. Was losing my breath. Was pulled along with all the journalists. Didn't ask a single question - figured they were doing such a fantastic job - let them.
Then I had until 6 p.m. to write it. Piece of cake.
In other news:
Booked my flight home. Toronto here I come!
Forgot to mention the Webster Awards - a dinner and award party for journalists that happened on Monday of this week. It was fun dressing up. I was supposed to schmooze with the B.C. journalists, but I couldn't recognize a single face. When people dress up, their appearance changes.
Then I got my heart broken.
And now I have one month left of school and projects I haven't even started are piling up. I made two promises: Stop drinking and start doing them!
